For this story, I explored the rise of crochet among college students as both a creative hobby and a mindful practice. I attended a Crochet Club meeting, spoke with students who picked up the craft during the pandemic, and interviewed club leaders about the mental health benefits of yarn art.

Through on-the-ground reporting and conversations with students, I found that crochet has become more than just a pastime—it’s a way for young people to connect, de-stress, and reclaim traditionally domestic crafts as empowering, personal, and community-building. This piece highlights the intersection of wellness, creativity, and culture.

In this piece, I profiled Boye Sofidiya, a Washington, D.C.–based violence interrupter and co-founder of the youth mentorship organization Growing Up. I interviewed Sofidiya about his journey—from his past involvement in the criminal legal system to his current mission preventing gun violence through mediation and mentorship.

I also spoke with colleagues and community leaders to understand the impact of his work and the broader challenges facing violence interruption efforts in D.C. This story gave me the opportunity to explore how lived experience, trust, and community relationships play a critical role in addressing and healing the trauma of gun violence.
